With the Big 12 Tournament ahead, WVU handed Randy Mazey a win in his final regular season game on Saturday. And then soon after the game, Mazey’s Mountaineers learned their seed fate as they try to send their head coach out with a conference tournament title.
West Virginia held on for a 6-5 victory over the Horned Frogs. The win came after TCU threatened to send the game into extra innings, scoring four runs in the last two innings. Relief pitcher Luke Lyman eventually sealed the deal for WVU, needing only three pitches to lock up the win and the series.

WVU will be a No. 4 seed – the same placement they were in going into the weekend – and once again meet TCU, the No. 9 seed, on Tuesday. TCU won the tournament crown in 2023 while West Virginia faltered coming off a share of the regular season conference title. WVU currently holds an 8-8 record in Big 12 Tournament play in 10 appearances in program history.
First pitch for West Virginia’s opening game of the program’s final Big 12 Tournament with Randy Mazey in the dugout is set for 1:30 pm ET and will air on Big Now on ESPN+.
